Technical Yacht Services carries out osmosis-treatment work on GRP vessels using epoxy primers or epoxy resin systems, according to the extent of damage. Moisture measurements before and during the work help determine suitable preparation and application procedures.<\/p>\n

Work begins with hull inspection and assessment of any damage. Necessary surface preparation and the appropriate epoxy protection system follow, before completing the below-waterline coating scheme.<\/p>\n

How Osmosis Develops in GRP Hulls<\/h2>\n

Water gradually penetrates the gelcoat and enters the GRP resin. It can hydrolyse susceptible chemical bonds and dissolve residual substances. Soluble components concentrated in microcavities increase local osmotic pressure, while weakened adhesion facilitates blistering and delamination. Water absorption alone does not constitute osmotic damage.<\/p>\n\n

Polyester, Vinyl Ester and Epoxy Resins<\/h3>\n

Orthophthalic and isophthalic polyester resins undergo hydrolysis of ester bonds, resulting in gradual degradation of the polymer network. Vinyl ester resins contain fewer hydrolysable ester bonds and generally offer better resistance to water.<\/p>\n

In amine-cured epoxy resins, water mainly causes absorption, plasticisation and possible weakening of adhesion at the resin\u2013glass fibre interface. In contrast, anhydride-cured epoxy systems contain ester bonds that can undergo hydrolysis. Durability depends on formulation and degree of cure.<\/p>\n\n

Water Diffusion, Glass Reinforcement and Protective Coatings<\/h3>\n

Water diffusion depends on resin chemistry, degree of cure, temperature and defects in the coating. Pigments and inorganic fillers are not necessarily barriers. Suitably oriented plate-like fillers can lengthen the water transport path, but poor wetting of particles by the polymer binder, agglomeration and microvoids at pigment\u2013resin interfaces can instead increase permeability. Particle morphology, dispersion and pigment volume concentration all matter.<\/p>\n

In GRP, glass fibres may impede diffusion, but glass-fibre\u2013resin interfaces, pores and microcracks can facilitate water ingress. The complete composite must therefore be assessed, not just the unreinforced resin. Suitable epoxy barrier systems are used for osmosis protection, while repairs may require high-build epoxy coatings. Selection depends on permeability, adhesion and the total specified dry film thickness (DFT).<\/p>\n

* Technical assessment of water ingress considers the diffusion coefficient (D), water uptake and coating thickness. Pigments may decrease or increase effective permeability depending on dispersion, wetting and interfaces. In GRP, glass-fibre arrangement and defects must also be considered. Measurements specific to the coating system are required.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Diagnosis and Remedial Treatment<\/h3>\n

Treatment depends on the extent of damage. Following inspection and moisture measurements, it may be necessary to remove degraded gelcoat, wash away water-soluble residues, dry the hull and repair the substrate before applying epoxy protection. Preventive protection of sound GRP differs from repair of a degraded composite. The coating system is completed with a compatible primer and antifouling in accordance with application instructions.<\/p>\n\n

Application conditions and acceptable moisture levels must follow the material manufacturer's instructions. Preparation and the time required depend on the moisture readings.<\/p>\n
